10 Tips for Creating the Perfect Staycation with an At-Home Summer Oasis
While living in a senior living community can provide extra freedom to travel, a staycation — a vacation spent at home — can also offer relaxation and enjoyment without the stress of travel and the fear of not getting a good night’s sleep in a strange bed.
These 10 ideas will help you transform your indoor and outdoor living spaces into a summer oasis perfect for memorable experiences with family and friends.
1. Designate a relaxation zone
Transform a corner of your home or yard with comfortable seating such as hammocks, lounge chairs, or even a daybed. Add soft cushions and cozy throw pillows to create an inviting atmosphere where you can unwind with a book or simply enjoy the peace and quiet. Consider adding a miniature water feature, wind chime, or meditation sand table to help transport your mind to a Zen-like state.
2. Create an indoor picnic area
Leave the birds and the bees to their own devices and bring the outdoor picnic experience indoors to your living room or three-season room. Spread a large blanket, arrange some floor cushions, and prepare a basket filled with your favorite picnic foods. Don’t forget a favorite bottle of summer bubbly. Add potted plants and string lights to mimic the ambiance of an outdoor setting.
3. Make an outdoor movie theater
Hang a white sheet or use a portable screen and set up a projector to show your favorite films under the stars. Many portable projectors can play movies directly from a streaming service on your smartphone. Provide comfortable seating with ottomans or lawn chairs, and don’t forget the popcorn!
4. Host a DIY crafting day
Dedicate a day to unleashing your creativity. Gather supplies for various crafts such as painting, knitting, scrapbooking, or building small projects. Set up crafting stations and invite family members or neighbors to join in, making it a fun and productive way to spend time together while creating personalized keepsakes.
5. Create a spa-like bathroom retreat
Use scented candles, essential oils, and soft music to create a calming ambiance in your bathroom. Invest in plush towels, a bathrobe, and luxurious bath products. Schedule time alone to enjoy a long soak in the tub or a refreshing shower. For a real splurge, hire an in-home massage therapist or mobile stylist. You’ll feel like you’ve spent the day at the spa without leaving home.
6. Plan themed dinners
Transport yourself to various parts of the world each night by choosing a country or cuisine to explore. Decorate your dining area to match the theme, play traditional music, and prepare authentic dishes. Invite your neighbors in on the fun and go to a new home each evening for a unique cross-cultural experience. Have neighbors choose a favorite destination that they’ve traveled to and have them share about that experience. It’s a fun way to vicariously enjoy global travel without leaving home.
7. Create a garden retreat
Consider this backyard option if you have a green thumb. Plant colorful flowers, herbs, vegetables, even ornamental trees. Add a small seating area where you can enjoy your garden’s beauty. This can be a wonderful activity to share with grandchildren, teaching them about gardening and nature.
8. Organize neighborhood game nights
Bring the community together with board games, card games, or even video games that everyone can enjoy. Create a cozy environment with plenty of snacks and drinks. This is a great way to bond with friends or family members of all ages.
9. Be a local tourist
Explore your hometown with fresh eyes by visiting local landmarks, parks, museums, or wineries that are new to you. Plan a week as if you’re a tourist, complete with guided tours, dining at new restaurants, and attending local events and festivals. Be sure to invite a few friends or family misembers along on your journey. This is a fantastic way to appreciate the unique culture and history of your area while creating memories with family and friends.
10. Share the experience through technology
Share your staycation with family and friends who can’t join you in person. Use video calls to include them in themed dinners, game nights, or even virtual tours of your home oasis. Share photos and videos on social media to keep everyone updated and involved.
Creating a stunning staycation is all about transforming your space and planning activities that bring joy and relaxation without having to go too far from home. By following these tips, you can enjoy a summer retreat that feels like a true escape, all while making lasting memories with loved ones and sleeping in your own bed at night.
Whether you’re spending time alone, with friends and family, or with others virtually, a staycation offers a wonderful opportunity to recharge and find happiness in and around your home.
