If you thought yoga was only for young people, think again. As a system of exercises used for attaining physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, yoga can be adapted to fit a variety of people with diverse abilities and needs. Dating back 5,000 years—to the third millennium BC—the benefits of yoga were and still are infinite. Increased muscle tone and flexibility, improved balance and strength, weight reduction, and protection from injury are just a few of the benefits active and healthy seniors can expect from practicing this ancient, therapeutic art form.

Recently, six Presbyterian Senior Living communities were ranked at the top of the U.S. News & World Report list of Best Nursing Homes 2015. Best Nursing Homes provides information on care, safety, health inspections, staffing, and operations for approximately all nursing homes and retirement communities located throughout the United States. Data is obtained from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Nursing homes too new or those with little data available may not appear in the list.

By now, you've all heard the new buzzword being thrown about by gerontologists and those working in aging services—successful aging. But what does it mean; what does it really look like? By definition, successful aging refers to the physical, mental, and social well-being of older age. In fact, many of the issues we face as we age are due to an accumulation of one or all of these factors. The good news is we don't have to let the aging process dictate how we choose to enjoy the second half of our lives.
