Falls are a common geriatric problem many seniors face. In an effort to prevent fall risk and the complications that can arise from fall injury, many senior care providers opt for the use of personal bed and chair sensor alarms. The question is, do they do more harm than good?

Patient-centered care is rapidly changing the healthcare care industry. For Presbyterian Senior Living, its a concept that's been incorporated into our mission and dates as far back as our origin—over 82 plus years ago. Our mission, to offer Christian understanding, compassion and a sense of belonging to promote wholeness of body, mind and spirit is at the very core of what culture change and patient-centered care is all about.

One of the more frustrating experiences of parenthood is when a child discovers the word why. When that happens, there is a transformation in the relationship between parent and child. The change from expected obedience to reasoning means that everything becomes less efficient. Things that happened quickly must now be explained, sometimes in painful detail. Eventually this leads to a moment of frustration when, after many attempts to explain why something must be done, the words are uttered that you swore as a young person you would never say to your child, “Because I said so!”

From my perspective, gift giving should be a source of joy for the person giving the gift as well as the receiver. To help you to understand my outlook on gift giving, I would like to provide you with a few of the insights I have gained over the years.

Over the past 20 years I have had the opportunity to write extensively about the work of Presbyterian Senior Living, leadership, and other topics related to serving seniors. In recent years we have often discussed launching a blog as another avenue to communicate with those seeking services for themselves and their family members as well as those working in the field. As I have contemplated this new initiative, several questions came to mind: Given the amount of information available using electronic media, does the world really need another blog? If the answer to the first question is yes, what are the goals of this new blog, and how will it differ from others that focus on serving seniors?
