Make Wellness Resolutions for a Healthier, Happier New Year

A New Year often inspires resolutions and lifestyle changes. Preparing for 2025 is the perfect time to create wellness resolutions for a healthier lifestyle. However, it is important to remember that small, achievable steps are the key to success.

Three wellness resolutions for enhanced living in 2025

1. Create a nutrition-focused mindset

Kevin suggests adding fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your daily diet. He also suggests ensuring you are eating the correct amount of protein.

Choosing healthy meal options is a key step. A lot of healthy eating research has focused on Blue Zones, regions of the world known for human longevity. This research shows that plant-based diets rich in vegetables, legumes, and whole grains promote a longer, healthier life. Based on this research, PSL Dining Services offers Mediterranean and Okinawan-inspired meals with ingredients that support brain and heart health.

Keeping healthy snacks on hand is another great idea for a nutrition-focused mindset. This can prevent unhealthy choices. Stock a wholesome snack station with nuts, fruit, and yogurt. This step provides a go-to option for when you want a nutritious boost between meals.

Another way to appreciate a meal is to grow your own food. Many PSL campuses have community gardens or offer personal garden space. These gardens provide residents with a place to grow their vegetables. This process connects individuals with their food while creating a sense of purpose and community.

2. Make movement a part of life

Getting regular exercise is a great wellness resolution, Kevin says. It can be as simple as a 20-minute walk or a gentle yoga session.

“The goal is to make fitness accessible, even to those with limited mobility. By providing low-impact classes and chair exercises, anyone can enhance flexibility and balance,” he added.

To encourage both socialization and activity, many PSL campuses organize walking sessions. Residents can enjoy scenic pathways with friends, making fitness enjoyable and socially engaging.

Functional fitness training is another emerging trend. This emphasizes physical abilities with exercises that mimic daily tasks. These might include standing from a sitting position or reaching upward. PSL’s wellness team incorporates these movements into classes to help residents stay strong and independent.

“Inspired by findings from the Greater Good Science Center at (the University of California,) Berkeley, we know that community-centered activities increase feelings of purpose and emotional well-being,” Kevin says.

3. Be mindful of each moment

In addition to exercising and eating healthy, residents can improve mental and emotional health by learning to stay connected to the present.

“According to the American Psychological Association, practicing mindfulness, journaling, or engaging in community discussions can reduce stress,” Kevin says. “Studies show that even small actions, like focusing on one positive aspect of each day or practicing deep breathing, can significantly improve mood and stress resilience.”

Kevin encourages people to keep a gratitude journal. They can record three things each day that bring them joy. This practice can reinforce positivity and foster a sense of connection to the present. Research shows that both of these can significantly boost happiness, Kevin says.

Finally, social prescribing, an emerging trend, is gaining traction in wellness communities. Kevin says this practice suggests getting involved in social activities, such as art classes or gardening, as a complement to traditional medical treatments. These activities provide emotional support and create a sense of purpose, helping residents feel more connected to others.

Employing small, consistent actions involving daily nutrition, movement, and mindfulness are three great wellness resolutions for 2025. These key steps can set anyone up for a successful new year. With evidence-based strategies and a commitment to the well-being of residents, PSL is helping seniors approach 2025 with purpose and vitality.
